Pastoral Landscape

This landscape of a forest and distant mountain range is by Alvan Fisher, a well-known American painter who was one of the first American-born landscape artists. Fisher's work mostly features natural elements in the northeastern United States. Completed in 1854, this painting was one of Fisher's later works. In the foreground by a stream is a small herd of cows and sheep, watched over by a man with a dog.
